The test tube.

Probably the most common, if not essential, piece of equipment used in a biological research lab. Granted, they’re not all made of glass, some are made of plastic. Regardless of their composition, they are the staple in the laboratory.

I found these in a collaborator’s lab, awaiting to be cleaned by her undergraduate student assistant. Racks and racks (and racks) of them. I did not envy this poor student’s task as I quickly left the room — I was afraid I’d be asked to help.
